Shortly after the expedition of geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden, Congress decided that Yellowstone’s unique attributes deserved a unique type of protections; hence, the establishment of Yellowstone as the world’s first National Park and signed into law by Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, For the Hayden Survey, William Henry Jackson took photographs throughout Yellowstone. Between and , Jackson, Wyoming photographer Bradley Boner traveled around the Park and re-shot.
In the summer of , photographer William Henry Jackson set out on an expedition to document the untamed, other-worldly beauty of a region that would become the country's first national park. These attractions are on or close to Yellowstone Avenue, the town's main street leading into the park, and both host park ranger programs in the summer. Also just outside the park entrance is the West Yellowstone Visitor Information Center. Riverside Trail (primarily a ski trail) enters the park from the eastern edge of town.
